Blacks and whites participated in non-violent protesting such as sitting at lunch counters where they had been denied service. By protesting peacefully them were able to show their innocence while mobs and riots attacked them.

Protesters used peaceful resistance to demonstrate against segregation. They did simple things like sitting at restaurants with other white people, and refused to move when told the store was closing. They were arrested for disorderly conduct but refused to pay the fines they were given. Also, when the gangs of white segregationists came to attack them, they did not fight back.

Civil Rights activists in the black community chose nonviolent protesting because it embraced the idea that their goal was not to be superior over whites, or have more power, but simply to have equal rights and opportunities. By using small steps rather than violent rioting, they were making the statement that there was no need to cause harm and therefore it was not their intention as they fought for their rights.
